Interest in Veterinary profession since 1933, DVM, UCD 1955. Pioneered specialty Veterinary Cancer Medicine. Co-authored initial textbooks on subject, in English and Japanese. Conducted Fellowships at National Cancer Institute 1964-65, Chester Beatty Research Institute-Royal Marsden Hospital London 1972-73, Alexander von Humboldt Senior Fellow, Justus Liebig University, Germany 1979-80 and visiting scientist, Indonesia.
Isolation of retroviruses causing sarcomas: 1) Reticuloendotheliosis, 2) Snyder-Theilen Feline and 3) only known Sarcoma of Simian Species, its cancerous oncogene (SSV) identical to PDGF. Comprehensive leukemogenesis studies during entire career.
International lectures, founding member VCS, and related societies. Speaker 3rd IVCC, Brazil – “One Medicine War on Cancer”. Life time recipient Marquis Who’s Who. Former students and colleagues honored him for 50 years of research achievements on his 80th birthday, a three-day symposium, “Dr. Gordon Theilen Tribute”.
